COMPLEXITIES OF TRANSITIONING FROM OPERATIONAL TO STRATEGIC HR
Years ago, I found myself stuck trying to figure out how to move from operational HR to strategic HR. I realised that the straightforward policies I had been trained to follow didn’t always apply to the increasingly ‘grey’ situations I faced. The more senior I became, the more these ambiguous situations arose, and I felt uncertain about making the right judgments.
FINDING GUIDANCE IN THE GREY
I was frustrated and worried about being stuck in my role. My desire for knowledge and growth led me to seek help from a coach and HR mentor. And that was the best decision I made. With their guidance, I developed new skills and became better at influencing leaders. I learned to embrace the ‘grey’ areas and reflect on my desired path as an HR professional. This intensive development helped me excel in my current role and transition into a more strategic HR position.
DISCOVERING THE POWER OF EXTERNAL SUPPORT
I discovered that having support from someone other than my manager was highly effective. I felt more comfortable sharing my thoughts and fears, which accelerated my growth. As I advanced into senior HR roles and joined leadership teams, my stressors shifted from technical HR work to the complexities of executive-level responsibilities, managing challenging relationships, and influencing senior stakeholders.
TRANSFORMATION THROUGH EXECUTIVE COACHING
Once again, I sought support and worked one-on-one with an executive coach, and it was life-changing. I finally had a sounding board, someone to help me set meaningful goals and work towards them intentionally. This experience allowed me to grow enormously. I became more aware of my behaviour and its impact on others, which changed my perspective.
PURSUING A PASSION FOR COACHING
Coaching had such a profound impact on me that I decided to learn the skill to help make that happen for others. In March 2023, I began my coaching training, and by March 2024, I achieved my Professional Certified Coaching qualification.
I am currently pursuing the Mastery level to deepen my skills and impact.
LIVING THE DREAM
Today, I’m living in Auckland, New Zealand with my family. I’ve learned to balance work and personal life. My husband and I are raising our two children, Kristen (10) and Zach (16), along with our beloved dog, Charlie. Through my experience, I’ve seen how coaching can improve personal development, career progression, and overall well-being. Now, I want to help you build a new life so you can experience the joy and success you’ve always desired.
